Soybean meal is a by-product of soybean oil extraction and a valued high-protein (up to 50%) feed of plant origin. Protein is valued for its amino acids, many of which are essential. Soybean meal also has a high lysine content (33 g/kg DM).
The energy content of one kilogram of soybean meal dry matter is 14 MJ/kg when fed to cattle and 15.5 MJ/kg when fed to pigs. The nutrients in soybean meal are easily digestible due to its low crude fibre content (7-8% DM).
